Heli Fishing
Summer time in Taupo is the dry fly fisherman's Mecca! The tributary streams will still produce smaller fish to a well presented dry fly but most often the action is in the hills, east of Lake. Helicopter transfers provide the perfect access.
Helicopters have opened up the rivers of the Kaweka, Kaimanawa and Urewera ranges to the fly fishermen. Such rivers as the Ngaruroro, Rangitikei, Mohaka, Raukituri and Waiau, to name just a few, produce brown and rainbow trout of trophy size.
The thrill of a big fish rising to take a tiny dry is an experience not to be missed, but a weighted nymph drifting through the deep pools will also bring heart-stopping action. Helicopters are not always necessary as there are plenty of rivers that are accessible by four wheel drive. Rivers such as the Rangitaiki, Upper Waitahanui, Waipunga and the untapped waters of the King Country will provide all the necessary excitement for the land-based client.
Wilderness Heli-Fly Fishing Package: Available October through to April. This is the ultimate fly fishing experience for the more competent angler. The often trophy-sized Rainbow and Brown trout can be sighted in the crystal clear streams, challenging the fisherman's skills with either a dry fly or nymph. 'Catch and release' is the practice on these Rivers. Included is a full day fly fishing, helicopter tranfers and lunches. Wilderness Fly Fishing licences and landing fees will apply on Heli-Fishing excursions - these vary depending on location.
