Boat Fishing

Fish for Trout on lake Taupo with the experts. Chris Jolly Outdoors have been helping clients catch Rainbow Trout on Taupo for over 30 years.

We have 4 launches to choose from and can cater for groups up to 140 people - all our fishing trips are private charters.

Lake Taupo offers excellent trout fishing all year round; there is no closed season on the Lake. Most fishing takes the form of trolling either lures or flies. No bait fishing is permitted. We use a combination of downriggers, harling and trolling on board.

Trout averages about 4 pounds and a typical excursion on the Lake will see your crew crew prepare your catch for a delicious snack either barbequed or sashimi style. You can even have your catch smoked and couriered to your destination in New Zealand at a small cost.

Trout is not available to purchase in restaurants unless you take your catch to the chef and request they cook it for you. Remember to have your fishing licence with you as proof that you really did catch it.

All our charter boats come equipped with galley, full bar facilities, fishing gear, music systems, flush toilets, lounge style cabins and safety equipment. Our friendly and professional staff will ensure your group has the trip of a lifetime.  For fishing trips we recommend a minimum of 3 hours.

Fishing licences are compulsory (one per angler) and can be purchased on board your launch. Licence prices for July 1st onwards are as follows:

Adult Season    $90.00
Child Season   $12.50

Adult Week        $38.00

Adult 24 hour    $17.00

Child 24 hour    $4.50

Some helpful tips and regulations for trout fishing on Lake Taupo:

1. Trout cannot be bought or sold - the only way to try it is to go and catch it
2. Minimum length to keep you catch is 40cm from tip of nose to V of tail
3. Undersized fish must be returned to water whether dead or alive
4. When releasing a trout: Leave the fish in the water if possible and unhook without touching it
Use long-nosed pliers to twist the hook free while the fish is still in the water
5. To measure the fish use a soft knot-less net and lay the fish on this measure while it is still in the net
6. Never squeeze the fish or rip the hook out
7. Daily bag limit for all water in the Taupo Fishing District, except Lake Rotoaira is 3 trout per day, regardless of species
8. You may fish only between the hours of 5.00am and 12.00 midnight
9. For all fishing methods you may only fish with one rod per angler at any time. You may have other assembled rods with you.
10. You can use up to 3 flies or lures on your line, but only one hook per lure or flie.
11. The use of bait is not permitted.
12. Every angler must have a valid fishing licence. These are available to purchase from your skipper on the day or from our booking office in the Taupo boat harbour.
