Tongariro Alpine Crossing Hike
One of New Zealand's 'Great Walks' - a must do in this area. The Tongariro Alpine Crossing in Tongariro National Park is one of New Zealand's most spectacular tramping tracks and is considered the most popular one-day hike in new Zealand. The Tongariro National Park is a World Heritage site which has the distinction of dual status, as it has been acknowledged for both its cultural and natural significance. The Crossing passes over the volcanic terrain of the multi-cratered active volcano Mount Tongariro, passing the eastern base of Mount Ngauruhoe. The 19.4km track is renowned for its barren yest beautiful "moon like" volcanic landscape, unusual geological features, visible volcanic activity and views of the surrounding countryside. Hike time: 6-7 hours. Travel time: 2 hours return. High level of fitness required.
Tauranga - Taupo River Hike
This is an exciting bush walk through the remote Tauranga-Taupo villa waterfall through pretty New Zealand native bush. See the beautiful and remotes Tauranga-Taupo waterfall. Hike time: 5 hours. Travel time: 2 hours return. High level of fitness required.
Tama Lakes Walk
An exciting, natural walk to the Tama Lakes on the slopes of Mount Ngauruhoe situated in the World Heritage Tongariro National Park. Tama Lakes occupy several old explosion craters on the Tama Saddle between Mt Ruapehu and Mt Ngauruhoe. There is an overview of the lower lakes and the track climbs steeply to the upper lake. It’s a less strenuous walk than the Tongariro Crossing, suitable for experienced walkers. Hike time: 5 hours. Travel Time: 2.5 hours return. Medium level of fitness required.
Waihohonu Hut Hike
This hike starts from the Desert Road to the Tongariro National park. It is a moderately easy walk though tussock land and beech forest to the historic hut used as a stop-over for stage coaches. From here you walk to view the pristine waters of Ohinepango springs and then return to the Desert Road. Hike time: 2.5 hours. Travel Time: 2 hours return. Medium level of fitness required.
Waihaha River Hike
This is a great walk following the Waihaha River on the western side of Lake Taupo, through a picturesque gorge and Beech trees, ascending a ridge and then down again to the river. The hike travels through a Podocarp hardwood forest and finishes at the Waihaha hut. The return hike is via the same track Hike time: 5 hours. Travel time: 1.5 hours return.
