Hunting and Turkey Shooting in the Taupo Region

We can arrange a number of hunting options around Lake Taupo. Most hunts can be arranged on a daily basis with 4WD transport or helicopter transfers. We can organise accommodation in the many local hunting lodges available.

You may indulge in hunting Red Stag, Sika Stag, Fallow Buck, or Wild Boar, all as part of a package. You have till late August to hunt the Red Stag before he casts his antlers, so what could be better than a combination ‘Struttin Tom’, Red Stag, Wild Boar, Rainbow and Brown trout safari in the Taupo Basin and beyond.

New Zealand Red Deer

Red Deer is the most prolific deer in New Zealand and at one point numbers almost reached pest proportions. As a consequence the population suffered under Government culling regimes in the 1950's and 60's. In later years, the Red Deer came in to the headlines because of the attention gained from helicopter crews shooting and capturing the animals for the increasingly high meat value and the velvet.

However, these days newly established deer farms are in full production and have taken the pressure off the 'feral' population, to the extent that we are now seeing rapid improvement in both wild animal numbers and quality. Other species of Deer that you will find in New Zealand for hunting include Rusa, Sika and Fallow.
